Setting up your Blogging Studio

design your studio space

This week I have been setting up my home studio. Since I will be doing fashion shoots for my style features, product photos for beauty articles and filming a Youtube channel, I want to make the process as seamless as possible. I ditched my iPhone pics for a new camera. I converted my spare room into my blogging studio and here I will tell you the details.

Pick a space where you can have privacy with enough room to take photos and film your episodes. My studio was formerly my dancing room, so I already have a giant 6’ x 8’ mirror installed in the space. This allows me to really study my poses and figure out what is going to look good. I have also decorated the space to be a room I feel creative and peaceful in and set up stereo equipment and lighting to set my mood as I do my creative work. If you will be creating videos— now is the time to design your set. You need a comfortable place to sit with good lighting. A white background will give you flexibility to add verbiage and messaging. Stage the background in an artful way to create the mood you wish to portray.

I chose the Nikon 1 s1 as an alternative to a DSLR and I couldn’t be more pleased. It was already the most affordable mirrorless camera on the market at $499.99 but now that it is being discontinued you can find it at the bargain price of $139. The Nikon 1 S1 rivals DSLR quality at a compact size, and has the capability of interchangeable lenses— with an adapter you can use any DSLR lens with this camera. Right out of the box it comes with intuitive auto modes and elegant programmed shooting modes such as a dreamy effect with bokeh control.

This camera shoots in RAW and has turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I have tried my hand with DSLR models before but with me being so petite I found them so cumbersome. Also with me not having pro photo experience — I can learn about exposure, lighting and shutter speeds and focus my camera manually all day long and not get results like this. This camera is programmed to perfection, unlike me, so if anyone out there has the eye but doesn’t want to get too technical, the Nikon 1 S1 is perfect. It also is a good choice for a young photographer who wants to experiment with different accessories and pro shooting techniques without a hefty price tag. I found this camera discounted at several vendors, and currently it is for sale at Amazon. This is an elegant piece of technology and with professional features that is very user friendly.

If you want to achieve a pro studio effect in your photos and videos, it can be done on the cheap. I would love to get the most elegantly engineered props and tools but while I am still moonlighting as a blogger I can’t afford the hefty price tag. Lucky for me Amazon offers this budget studio in a box, containing 2 soft box lights, 2 umbrella lights and 3 backdrop screens. I now have the flexibility to seamlessly film my Youtube videos, and take product and fashion shots in a pretty automated way. An added bonus is that all this breaks down and fits into a heavy duty carrying bag which is included with the kit. I am practically child-sized and managed to set this up on my own easily. Simple as that.

If you bagged that awesome mirrorless camera I mentioned above — the Nikon 1 S1 and you want to take fashion shots of yourself you will want the capability for remote shooting. This little gadget has you covered. With the Nikon WU-1b Wi-Fi adapter your smartphone can be used as a remote shutter device, and photos can be uploaded to your preferred cloud based storage provider right from your phone.

Now you are ready to create your Badassblog Brand and disperse it to the world through social media. Now that I have set up my studio I can start filming my vlog episodes on Youtube. I hope I will see you there.

  1. I wish I could have a dedicated space for taking photos! My office / art studio doesn't get enough light to shoot, so I shoot outdoors or on the dining room table.

    1. Hi Willow Moon- Maybe a hack like this would give you more options--
and fyi the lights in the studio set linked in the post all break down to a reasonable sized carry bag. Best of luck!
